Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure used to eliminate small varicose veins, thread and spider veins. These veins are usually found around the thigh, inner knee area, calves and ankles and are identified by distended red and blue blood vessels just below the skin’s surface, they may appear as tiny blemishes or can cover large areas looking like a bruise, making the patient particularly self-conscious.

The treatment involves injecting a solution into the vein using a micro-needle, thereby causing the vein to collapse and fade from view. It is a virtually painless treatment which has been shown to be the most successful treatment available today for these tiny blood vessels. Most patients are pleased with the difference that sclerotherapy makes, usually seeing an overall improvement of 80-90 % following treatment. It is important to realize however that this treatment does not prevent new veins from emerging in the future and as time passes by, it may be necessary for touch-up treatments when new leg veins surface.

Treatment takes 30 mins-1hour. You will be given a pair of support stockings which should be worn for 3 days and nights following treatment. The number of treatments depends on the patient and extent of the condition and each session must have a 6-8 week interval. At your consultation I will give you pre and post treatment advice/information, and answer any questions that you may have. Most patient’s experience no complications following their treatment, but there may be slight bruising and discolouration as the veins can take up to a few months to disappear following treatment.

You can go back to your daily activities almost immediately. Your skin may be red for up to 24 hours.
