How to Care for Sensitive Skin

Those of us with sensitive skin can sometimes struggle to find a skin care regime that really works. All the seasons can have negative effects on our skin and it can be a real pain – literally, dry, brittle skin is never very pleasant. So, if you’re sick of trying cream after cream and not getting anywhere with it, then read on; we’ve taken the time to create this guide that will help you to care for your sensitive skin.

Don’t Use Too Many Creams

One mistake that many people make is to use too many different creams; if you use so many different creams, you will clog up your pores making it much more likely that you will suffer from a breakout. Putting too much stuff on your face can actually cause your skin to become bumpy, itchy and red. In general, you should use no more than three products on your face at any one time.

Let Your Skin Breathe

Skin needs to breathe; ok so many not in the same way as your lungs, but pores need to be left unclogged. It is therefore important to give your skin a break from makeup. Try not to wear foundation all of the time but if you do remember not to cake it on – a gentle thin toning layer will do! Wearing too much foundation can actually disrupt the skin’s natural renewal process.

Avoid Fragranced Products

Fragranced products can irritate the skin so don’t judge a cream by its smell, even though this can be very tempting! Fragrances in creams and products are actually one of the most common causes of contact dermatitis – this is an itchy red rash that isn’t very pleasant. The rash can last hours or in some cases weeks until it actually improves. Go for fragrance free products – it’s better to have no smell than a large red rash across your face.

Keep Hydrated

Water is the skin’s best friend. No matter what your skin type, it is always important to keep hydrated; this will help to flush antitoxins out of the body and promote healthy and clearer skin. Hydration is a great way to boost your body’s immune system.

Don’t Over-Wash

Over washing can be as damaging to your skin as not washing your face at all. Harsh chemicals can cause your skin to dry out, make it irritable and flaky – not what you really want at all is it? Some people have been known to wash their face at least 5 times a day, which is far too much! Skin should be washed twice a day with gentle products and cotton wash cloths or your hands.

Warm Water – Not Hot!

In winter time it can seem like a great idea to have a steaming hot bath, but actually it is much better for your skin to bathe in cooler water rather than boiling hot – plus you don’t have to deal with that ‘ow!’ moment when you hop in!

Wear Sunscreen

Wearing sunscreen is one of the best ways to protect your skin and prevent skin cancer. Even on the dull cloudy days your skin is affected by the rays of the sun, so choose face creams with a touch of sun protection in them. In the summer time or abroad, try to stay out of the direct sun between 11am and 3pm when the sun is at its hottest.

Take care of your sensitive skin by following the guidance above and your skin will remain healthy and you will feel great! It is the best accessory you will ever have.

Wrinkle Treatment Explained

If you are considering having wrinkle treatment, you may have some questions about how it works and what to expect from the procedure. As leading providers of wrinkle treatment in Birmingham, we at Fiona Clossick Facial Aesthetics can answer any questions you may have about the procedure, and in this blog post we will explain how wrinkle treatment works, what you can expect at your appointment and what you can expect following your treatment.

What is Wrinkle Treatment?

Wrinkle treatment is a drug that is used cosmetically to remove wrinkles by paralysing the muscles. It is delivered by a needle directly to the muscles that are responsible for causing wrinkles and fine lines. The drug then paralyses the muscle, smoothing the wrinkles or lines in the desired area and making the skin appear younger.

What Can I Expect From the Procedure?

Receiving wrinkle treatment for cosmetic purposes is a simple procedure, which can be performed by any professional with the relevant qualifications. The procedure is relatively painless, with the majority of recipients only reporting mild discomfort from the injection/s. People will often see results only a few days after the procedure, noticing smoother fine lines and wrinkles, and generally seeing more youthful looking skin. For others, it may take up to a few weeks before the results of the procedure are noticeable.

How Long do Wrinkle Treatments Last?

The results of wrinkle treatment can last up to six months after the initial treatment in some people, and during this time you will not have to return for another treatment. Results can vary depending on your skin type and the extent of your wrinkles, as well as certain behaviours over the period that may have damaged the skin; including sun exposure and smoking. A consultation with the professional who delivers your treatment will give you some indication of how regularly you will require wrinkle treatment.

If you are considering having wrinkle treatment, we at Fiona Clossick have the experience and professionalism to help you achieve younger, healthier looking skin. For more information, please contact us today by calling 07815904578.

Skin Damage

There are many factors that result in damage to the skin. This is something that often has a negative impact on the psychological wellbeing of a person, as they struggle with the visible effects of skin damage. Today, we’ll take a look at some of the most common forms of damage to the skin and see what you can do to improve them.

Stretch Marks

Stretch marks are particularly common in women, but often affect men. They are caused when the skin suddenly stretches, due to weight gain or growth spurts during puberty and pregnancy. They can also be caused by other conditions or through the overuse of strong steroid creams and ointments. Although they start off as unsightly red or purple marks, they tend to fade to white or silvery lines.

There are many creams and oils that claim to treat and reduce stretch marks, but there are very few that have been shown to make a difference.

Scars

It is unlikely that you will have made it through to your adult life without at least one scar that tells a story! They can be caused by many things, such as accidental injury, surgery or burning. Although most scars heal over time, and may fade until they are practically invisible, there are some scars that can be noticeable and embarrassing.

If you receive a burn or cut that is likely to turn into a scar, it’s wise to make sure you treat it now to reduce the scar before it has developed. Don’t pick at scabs that have already formed, and protect the wound from outside factors.

Sun Damage

We all know that too much exposure to the sun’s rays can cause damage to your skin. Sun burn can lead to painful blisters and redness which should fade within a few days. However, there are lasting effects of sun damage, and you can permanently harm your skin through repeated exposure.

All of the above forms of skin damage can be treated with our Dermaroller treatment, which stimulates the skin to regenerate and restore itself in a natural way. This is just one of many treatments on offer here at Fiona Clossick Facial Aesthetics, so if you’re looking for Dermaroller treatment, skin peels or wrinkle treatment in Birmingham, contact us today by calling 07815904578 to speak to a member of our team.

Simple Skincare Secrets

We all want beautiful skin and this can be simpler to achieve than you might think. Here we take a look at some of our favourite skin care secrets, which might just surprise you!

Get Some Sleep

The secret to not looking tired really is as simple as not feeling tired. If you skimp on sleep this can really take its toll on your skin and will leave it looking and feeling a little lacklustre.

Whilst you sleep your skin goes into repair mode and renews itself at a faster rate than during the daytime.

A lack of sleep can also disrupt important hormonal and metabolic changes that occur in your skin. So make sure you get your beauty sleep!

Have a Cup of Tea

Tea has a number of amazing beauty benefits. Green tea in particular is also one of the healthiest drinks around and is packed full of antioxidants. These powerful substances fight free radicals, the damaging compounds that contribute to skin ageing.

Green tea also contains protective compounds known as theaflavins, which are thought to help prevent the breakdown of collagen and even some skin cancers.

Dark Chocolate

We know what you’re thinking this simply can’t be true; after all, everyone knows chocolate gives you bad skin.

However, it might surprise you to learn that this is actually a bit of a myth and there’s very little scientific evidence to support this claim.

Whilst it’s best not to overindulge in chocolate due to it high sugar and fat content, dark chocolate can in fact have a number of beauty benefits.

Dark chocolate contains a number of antioxidants which can help protect your skin and has also been found to increase the levels of mood boosting neurotransmitters in your brain too.

Dark chocolate is also thought to have some stress fighting abilities, and can help reduce the levels of collagen damaging stress hormones in our bodies.

Ditch the Salt

Sodium is one of the worst foods for your skin. This is because eating too much salt causes your body to retain water, which can lead to swelling.

The skin around your eyes is particularly thin and as a result tends to swell easily; meaning over indulging in your favourite salty treats could leave you facing some puffy eyes in the morning.

Here at Fiona Clossick we are an established skin clinic in Birmingham and are able to offer a range of aesthetic treatments, perfect for enhancing the look of your skin. For more information please don’t hesitate to contact us today, by giving us a call on 07815904578, to speak to a member of our friendly team.

Eat Your Way To Better Skin

If you want to look after your skin, it’s not just about the things that you put on it, and how well you clean it. While it’s true that if you have skin issues, it’s not necessarily caused by eating too much chocolate or greasy food, there are still dietary changes you can make to give your skin a helping hand.

Keep Hydrated

It’s important to make sure that you get plenty of water during the day to keep yourself hydrated. Water is one of the best things you can drink so keep a bottle of water in your bag whenever you go out. Although water is good, most fluids count towards your recommended daily allowance (6-8 glasses), but this doesn’t include alcohol!

Get Your Five–a–Day

Make sure that you have a good variety of fruit and vegetables in your diet by eating different colours. Fruit and veg is packed full of natural anti-oxidants, and it’s cheap and good for your waistline too!

Eat Fat!

We all think of fat as being the worst thing for you, but monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats are naturally occurring and can be found in food like avocados, fish and nuts. These friendly fats help to keep your skin supple and hydrated.

Omega-3 and Omega-6

These are essential fatty acids, which means that the body cannot produce them, so you need to make sure you can obtain them through your diet. Omega-3 encourages the body to produce anti-inflammatory compounds, which is great for skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. Eat oily fish, flaxseed oil, linseeds and walnuts to top your body up.

Vitamins C and E

Vitamin C is a brilliant anti-oxidant; it helps to boost the immune system and give you great skin. It’s found in a wide range of fruit and veg such as broccoli, oranges, kiwi and sweet potato. Vitamin E is great as it protects your skin from cell damage. You can find it in almonds, hazelnuts and sunflower oil.

Here at Fiona Clossick, we have a fantastic range of aesthetic treatments to get your skin looking fabulous! Pop into our skin clinic in Birmingham or contact us on 07815904578 for more information about any of our services.
